There was some extra help available so Terry left the site to go to the hospital to research having a tour, as well as a possible time of visiting with the patients in the leper clinic. After meeting with Simon Songe, the KMT Hospital Accountant, Simon agreed to try and set something up for later in the afternoon.
During lunch, Simon called and put the Hospital Secretary Agutuu Oballa on the phone and a tour was set for 2:30. We were warmly welcomed by Agutuu, and we embarked on a one hour tour of the entire hospital. Once we mentioned that we were working with CACHA and knew Lloyd and Erla Koch (who come to work in Shirati every year) we were golden! The work that has been done over the past few years including a new water tank, drinking water in all the wards, a new ICU, a new lab, and a new Preceptor office is amazing, and making such a difference. While our group is mostly focused on work at the Tech School and Diocese parishioners, the fact that we were affiliated with CACHA was gratifying to Agutuu and the staff that we met.
In the beginning of our tour, Agutuu asked if we were musical. We were a bit nonplussed, but said, "Well, sort of."' It turns out that he owns a small recording studio on the side. He asked if he could record us singing, so we headed to the studio after the tour and recorded the "Doxology" and "Amazing Grace"! The Sound Tech/Producer is also a composer and played one of his pieces. It was catchy and very well done. We asked for an electronic copy which we are still awaiting. Not what we had anticipated, but we had a lot of fun!
We enjoyed another great supper together, and a lovely conversation with another guest at the diocese. Our days are full, and full of surprises!
